How Partners Can Bond with Your Baby Bump

Updated: May 25

Bonding with your baby before they're born isn't just possible—it's powerful. At Beyond the Bump, we believe that the journey into parenthood should be shared, deeply felt, and filled with love from the very start. Whether you're the pregnant partner or supporting someone who is, knowing how to connect with your baby in the womb can lay the foundation for a strong, secure bond—and yes, it really does make a difference.

In our antenatal classes and The Birth & Baby Academy online course, we dedicate space to this because we know how meaningful (and sometimes emotional!) it can be. Here’s how partners can connect through the five senses—and more.

👂 Hear: Talk, Read, and Sing to Baby

LGBT pregnancy

Your baby’s hearing develops around 18 weeks and becomes more sensitive over time. By the third trimester, they can recognise voices—especially yours.

Ways to bond through sound:

  • Read a favourite childhood story or just chat to your bump about your day.

  • Sing or hum a song regularly—babies often recognise familiar tunes once born.

  • Place headphones gently on the bump and play calming music or lullabies.

👶 Why it matters: Research shows newborns recognise and are soothed by voices they heard in the womb. It’s not just adorable—it’s brain-building.

🤲 Touch: Hands-on Connection

Physical touch can be incredibly powerful for both of you. Your baby can respond to touch from around 20 weeks.

Ways to bond through touch:

  • Gently place your hand on the bump and feel for movements.

  • Use bump massage with pregnancy-safe oils

  • Try “bump bonding” rituals—same time each night, connect with a gentle rub and a few quiet words.

Bonus benefit: Physical touch releases oxytocin—the love hormone—helping everyone feel more connected and calm.

👃 Smell: Scents That Support Calm

While baby can’t smell in the womb (that starts after birth), scent plays a big role in creating a calming environment and ritual for bonding.

Ways to bond through scent:

  • Use pregnancy-safe essential oils like lavender or chamomile during bonding moments.

  • Choose a scent that you continue to use after birth—your baby will begin to associate it with safety and calm.

🌿 Did you know? At our in-person antenatal hub, we’ve carefully chosen scents to create a sense of calm and comfort—because environment matters.

👁️ Sight: Visualising and Preparing

Your baby might not see the world yet, but visual connection is powerful for you.

Ways to bond through sight:

  • Look at ultrasound photos together and imagine baby’s features.

  • Create a bump photo diary—documenting your journey can make it feel more real and exciting.

  • Attend antenatal classes together where you can see baby growth models and prepare for birth as a team.

📷 Top tip: Partners often say this makes the experience feel more real. That emotional connection grows when you see and understand what's happening inside.

👅 Taste: Shared Meals, Shared Experience

Your baby tastes what you eat through the amniotic fluid. While you don’t need to change your meals drastically, eating together mindfully can create moments of shared joy.

Ways to bond through taste:

  • Cook a favourite meal together that you’ll one day make for your baby.

  • Talk to baby during dinner—let them know what’s on the menu!

  • Plan a “future family dinner” and write down meals you’d love to share once baby is born.

🍽️ It’s not just food—it’s a connection to family, culture, and love.

💗 The Sixth Sense: Emotional Bonding

pregnancy

Bonding isn't just physical—it's emotional. It’s the feeling of connection, the visualising of who this little human might be, the excitement and the fear and the love all wrapped into one.

Ways to deepen emotional bonding:

  • Journal or talk about your hopes, dreams, or worries for parenthood.

  • Attend our Beyond the Bump antenatal courses together, where we create space for bonding, real conversation, and practical support.

  • Join The Birth & Baby Academy—our online course with a whole section dedicated to partner bonding and how both of you can feel connected before birth.

💬 You don’t have to know all the answers—but being present, involved, and emotionally open goes a long way.
