Ways to Feed Your Baby

Updated: May 18

Whether you’re still pregnant and thinking ahead, or you’ve got a baby in your arms right now and are trying to figure it all out — let’s start with this: how you feed your baby is your choice.

There’s no one-size-fits-all. No “right” answer. Just what feels right for you, your baby, and your circumstances.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the main feeding options — from breastfeeding to bottle feeding and everything in between — without the guilt, pressure, or shoulds. Just information, support, and a reminder that you're doing brilliantly.

🤱 Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is often presented as the “default,” but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy, natural, or right for everyone.

Breastmilk is an incredible source of nutrition, immunity, and comfort — but feeding isn’t just about milk. It’s about connection, bonding, and mental wellbeing too.

If you want to breastfeed, support can make a big difference. Knowing what to expect in the early days, learning about latch and positioning, and having someone to turn to when it’s hard is essential — not optional.

Inside The Birth & Baby Academy, we have an entire section dedicated to breastfeeding, including:

  • How milk supply works

  • Common challenges and how to overcome them

  • When (and how) to ask for help

  • How to express and store milk

  • Feeding cues and newborn patterns

💡 If you're looking for guidance right now, our downloadable Feeding Your Baby eBook is a practical and reassuring guide to everything from first feeds to combo feeding and more.

🍼 Formula Feeding

Formula feeding is a safe, healthy, and valid choice — and for some families, it’s the best choice.

Whether it’s because breastfeeding didn’t work out, you chose not to breastfeed, or you’re co-parenting and sharing feeds, formula can provide all the nutrition your baby needs.

We talk you through:

  • Choosing a first infant formula

  • How to prep feeds safely (the NHS way!)

  • Responsive bottle feeding and bonding

  • Managing night feeds and routines

There's also a myth-busting section in the Academy that covers common concerns and pressures people feel around formula.

🧡 Combination Feeding

Yes, you can do both.

Combination feeding means using both breastmilk and formula — and the way you do it is totally up to you. It might look like:

  • Breastfeeding in the day, formula at night

  • Expressed milk in bottles and a few formula top-ups

  • Starting with breastfeeding and introducing formula later

Whatever your reason for combi-feeding (and you don’t have to justify it to anyone), we’ve got guidance inside The Birth & Baby Academy to help you make it work for you.

🍃 What About Mixed Emotions?

However you feed your baby, there’s often emotion tied up in it — joy, exhaustion, pride, frustration, grief, relief… sometimes all at once.

There’s no award for doing it a certain way. There’s just what’s right for you.

We created The Birth & Baby Academy to take the pressure off and offer real, honest support on feeding — whatever that looks like for your family. Inside the course, you’ll find down-to-earth videos, tips, and tools to help you feel confident with feeding — and clear about your options from day one.
