The 20-week scan, often called the anomaly scan or mid-pregnancy scan, is a detailed ultrasound that usually takes place between 18 and 21 weeks of pregnancy. It's an exciting milestone, but it can also feel a little daunting. At Beyond the Bump, we want you to feel informed, supported, and empowered every step of the way.
What is the 20-Week Scan?

This scan looks closely at your baby's bones, heart, brain, spinal cord, face, kidneys, and abdomen. It checks for certain physical conditions and helps to assess your baby's growth and development. The sonographer will also check the position of your placenta, your amniotic fluid levels, and your cervix.
In the UK, the 20-week scan is offered to all pregnant people as part of the NHS screening programme, but it is, of course, optional. It's important to know that while this scan can pick up a range of conditions, it can't detect every possible issue.
What Happens During the Scan?

The scan is similar to your earlier dating scan. The sonographer will apply gel to your abdomen and move a handheld device (the transducer) over your skin. Images of your baby will appear on the screen. The scan usually takes around 30-40 minutes, and you may be asked to move around a little to get clearer images.
Many people ask if they will find out their baby's sex at this scan. If you wish, and if your baby is in a position that allows it, the sonographer may be able to tell you. Just let them know at the start of your appointment.
How to Prepare for Your 20-Week Scan
Wear comfortable clothing that can easily expose your bump.
Drink water beforehand if advised – a full bladder can help get clearer images.
Bring a support person if you wish (check with your hospital's current guidelines).
Think about any questions you want to ask in advance.
Making Informed Decisions
Sometimes, the 20-week scan may identify something that requires further investigation. If this happens, it can feel overwhelming. Remember, you have choices.
A really helpful tool we teach in The Birth & Baby Academy is using BRAIN to guide your decision-making. Our free video, "Taking Control of Your Birth," walks you through this framework in detail.
Knowing your options can help you feel more confident and in control, whatever decisions lie ahead.
