When you're preparing for a newborn baby, it can feel like you need to buy absolutely everything.
Every website, social media advert, and baby shop seems to have a list of "must-have" products. From expensive gadgets to nursery accessories you'll use once, it's easy to believe that your baby needs a house full of equipment before they arrive.
But here's the truth: babies actually need very little.
As lovely as it is to create the perfect nursery, what your newborn really needs is warmth, milk, safety, comfort, and you.
At Beyond the Bump, we believe preparing for your baby should feel exciting, not overwhelming. So if you're wondering what to buy before baby arrives, here's our no-nonsense guide to the baby essentials checklist UK parents actually need, plus the items you can happily leave until later.
Preparing for Baby Starts Before You Buy Anything
One of the biggest surprises for many parents is that we often spend months researching prams, cots, and baby gadgets, but very little time preparing for labour, birth, recovery, and the realities of life with a newborn.
The truth is that your baby won't care whether their nursery matches the colour scheme on Pinterest.
What often makes the biggest difference is feeling informed, prepared, and confident about what's ahead.
That's exactly why we created our free You're Probably Preparing for Birth Backwards guide. It explores the 3 simple shifts that help women move beyond hospital bag checklists, birth reels, and "going with the flow" to focus on what actually matters in labour.
Before you spend another evening comparing baby gadgets, make sure you're also preparing for birth, recovery, feeding, and life with a newborn.
Newborn Baby Essentials Checklist: The Must-Haves
You don't need mountains of baby equipment. Focus on these first baby essentials and you'll have everything you need for those early weeks.
1. Safe Sleep Space

Your baby will need:
A cot, crib, or Moses basket that meets current UK safety standards
A firm, flat mattress that fits the sleep space snugly
Two or three fitted sheets
The safest place for your baby to sleep is in the same room as you for at least the first six months.
Top Tip: Keep the sleep space completely clear. No bumpers, pillows, duvets, nests, soft toys, or loose blankets.

2. Car Seat

If you're travelling by car, you'll need:
A rear-facing car seat that meets current UK regulations
A seat that fits your car correctly
Confidence installing and adjusting it safely
Top Tip: Practice fitting your car seat before baby arrives. The last thing you want to be doing after birth is trying to work it out in a hospital car park.
3. Nappies and Changing Essentials

Your newborn baby checklist should include:
Plenty of nappies (disposable or reusable)
Baby wipes or reusable cloth wipes
A changing mat
Nappy cream if needed
Many parents find it helpful to keep changing supplies downstairs as well as upstairs.
Top Tip: Newborns can easily go through 10-12 nappies a day in the early weeks.
4. Baby Clothes

When it comes to clothes, simple is best.
We recommend:
6-8 babygrows
6-8 vests or bodysuits
2-3 cardigans or jumpers
A hat for outdoor use if weather appropriate
Top Tip: Prioritise comfort and practicality over cute outfits. During the newborn stage you'll spend far more time changing nappies than taking photographs.
5. Feeding Supplies

What you need will depend on how you plan to feed your baby.
For breastfeeding:
Nursing bras
Breast pads
Muslin cloths
Water bottle and snacks for yourself
For formula feeding:
Bottles
Formula
Sterilising equipment
Top Tip: If you are planning to formula feed and are giving birth in hospital, ready-made formula bottles can be much easier in the first few days than trying to manage powder formula and sterilising equipment.
6. Baby Care Basics

A few simple baby care essentials are all you need:
Digital thermometer
Baby nail clippers or emery board
Baby bath or clean sink
Towels and flannels
Top Tip: Plain water is all most newborn babies need for bathing initially. Expensive baby toiletries aren't necessary.
Nice-To-Haves (But Not Essentials)
These items can be helpful, but don't feel pressured to buy them before baby arrives.
Baby carrier or sling
Bouncer chair
Play mat
Breast pump
Nappy bin
White noise machine
Every baby is different. What one family swears by might sit untouched in another family's house.
The good news? Most things can be bought later if you discover you need them.
Don't Forget the Things You Can't Buy in a Shop
When people think about preparing for a newborn baby, they often focus on products.
But some of the most valuable preparations aren't things you can add to your basket.
Consider spending time preparing for:
Labour and birth
Your options and choices during pregnancy
Feeding your baby
Newborn sleep expectations
Postnatal recovery
Understanding normal newborn behaviour
Your mental wellbeing after birth
Building your support network
These are often the things that help parents feel calm and confident once their baby arrives.
Our Birth Preparation Programme was created to help parents understand not just how birth works, but how to navigate the maternity system, make informed decisions, prepare for recovery, and feel confident about life with a newborn.
Because buying a cot is important.
Knowing what to expect when your baby wakes every two hours is important too.
What You Really Don't Need
If you're trying to keep your baby shopping list UK realistic, here are a few things you can safely leave off for now:
Fancy Nursery Furniture
Your baby should sleep in your room for at least the first six months, so there's no rush to create the perfect nursery.
A Baby Monitor
Most newborns are never out of sight in those early weeks.
Expensive Rockers and Gadgets
Many babies don't use them for long, if at all.
Loads of Newborn Clothing
Some babies skip newborn sizes altogether.
Lots of Fancy Outfits
They look adorable, but practical babygrows will get far more use.
Remember, the baby industry is worth billions. Their job is to convince you that you need more.
Your baby disagrees.
Preparing for Baby: Keep It Simple
The truth is, babies need much less stuff than the shops would have you believe.
What matters most is:
✔ A safe place to sleep
✔ Milk feeds
✔ Clean nappies
✔ Loving, responsive care
✔ Parents who feel informed, supported, and prepared
The rest can be figured out as you go.
